Ecological Encounter

A walk through the woods brings an exciting encounter with the scientific concepts of food chains and ecological dependence.

We look at how energy flows from the sun through the ecosystem and the requirements of all living things for water, air, minerals and energy.

The session is usually split into two parts. First, the children become Munch Line Monitors and use their observation skills to see whether the ‘Munch Lines’ (food chains) are running smoothly in the woods.

The Connection Inspection then investigates how our most basic needs are met through the various cycles.

The roles of producers and consumers become clear as the children take on the roles and populate a new island before considering the consequences of pollution.

Learning Outcomes

Know where all plants and animals get their energy from.
Understand there are 3 main cycles air, water and nutrients, they go round and round and never run out!
Understand that these 3 cycles are connected to one another
Visualise how pollution effects the 3 cycles and the food web.
Experience food webs and how they link into the cycles
Appreciate the effect that man can have on the balance of these natural systems
